Almost every article blames dry air. Dry air is one of four causes, and if you guess wrong you spend money on a humidifier while the actual problem — salt buildup in the pot — keeps burning new leaves. The leaf tells you which it is, if you know what to look at.
Why tips go first
The tip of a leaf is the end of the plumbing. Water moves up through the plant and out through the leaves, and the tip is the last stop on that line — furthest from the stem, lowest water pressure, last to get anything. Whatever is dissolved in that water also concentrates there as the water evaporates away.
So tips are the early-warning system for two different failures: not enough water arriving, and too much of something bad arriving. That is why one symptom has several causes, and why the fixes point in opposite directions.
The four causes and how to tell them apart

The fastest discriminator: look at the soil surface and the drainage hole before you look at anything else. A white crusty deposit means salt, and salt is far more common than the internet suggests, because people fertilise houseplants on the assumption that more food is more growth.
Second fastest: check whether other plants in the same room are affected. Humidity is a room-level problem — if the air is at 25%, several plants suffer. Salt and fluoride are pot-level and species-level. One bad plant next to five happy ones is not a humidity problem.
If it is salt buildup: flush the pot
Fertiliser is mineral salt. Plants take up some of it; the rest accumulates in the soil every time you feed. Tap water adds more. Eventually the concentration in the soil gets high enough to pull moisture *out* of the roots rather than let it in — chemically it is the same effect as drought, which is why a plant sitting in damp salty soil shows drought symptoms.
- Take the pot to a sink, tub or outside. This gets messy.
- Scrape off any visible crust on the soil surface and throw it away — do not just water it back in.
- Run room-temperature water slowly through the pot for several minutes, letting it drain freely the whole time. You want roughly four times the pot's volume passing through.
- Let it drain completely. Do not leave the pot standing in the runoff you just made — that is the salt going back in.
- Do not fertilise for at least a month afterwards.
- If the soil is over a year old and heavily crusted, repot into fresh mix instead. Flushing exhausted compacted soil is treating the symptom.
Going forward: feed at half the strength on the label, and only while the plant is actively growing. Most houseplants need nothing at all from roughly November through February in Atlanta, because they are not growing enough to use it. Fertilising a dormant plant is how the salt gets there in the first place.
If it is fluoride: change the water, not the air
Municipal water is fluoridated, and a handful of houseplant species are genuinely sensitive to it — spider plants and dracaenas most famously. The fluoride accumulates in leaf tissue and the tip dies back. No amount of humidity fixes this.
- Leaving water out overnight does not remove fluoride. It lets some chlorine gas off, which is a different chemical and a much smaller problem. This is the most repeated bad advice in houseplant care.
- What does work: rainwater, distilled water, or reverse-osmosis water for the sensitive species only. You do not need to do this for the whole collection.
- Avoid superphosphate fertilisers on sensitive plants — they carry fluoride as a contaminant.
- Keep the soil pH from going acidic, which increases fluoride uptake. Regular repotting handles this.
Practical middle ground: a bucket outside catches enough Atlanta rain to keep three or four sensitive plants happy most of the year. We get around 50 inches annually — this is one of the few places where rainwater collection is genuinely low-effort.
If it really is humidity: what actually raises it
Winter heating is brutal on thin-leaved tropicals. Heated indoor air in Atlanta in January routinely sits in the 20–30% range, while a calathea evolved in air at 70% or more. That gap is real and it does cause tip burn.
But almost every popular fix for it does nothing. Misting raises humidity around a leaf for a few minutes and then it is gone, and on fuzzy-leaved plants in still air it invites fungal spotting instead. Pebble trays are barely better — the evaporating surface is too small to change a room. We wrote up why misting does not work in full, because it is the single most persistent myth in this hobby.
- A humidifier. The only thing that reliably moves a room's humidity. Run it near the plants, not across the room, and clean the tank weekly — a dirty reservoir aerosolises bacteria into the air you breathe.
- Group plants together. Each one transpires, and a tight cluster holds a genuinely more humid pocket. Free, and measurable with a hygrometer.
- Move the plant to a bathroom or kitchen — the two rooms already running at higher humidity, if there is enough light. Light comes first; a humid dark corner kills faster than dry air.
- Enclose it. A cabinet, a cloche, an old aquarium. This is what people with thriving calatheas are actually doing.
- Get it away from the vent. A plant in the path of forced-air heating is being dried at several times the room rate. Moving it three feet often solves the whole problem for free.
Buy a cheap hygrometer before you buy anything else. It costs almost nothing and it tells you whether humidity is your problem at all — which, given the four causes above, it often is not.
What to do with the damaged leaves
Brown tissue is dead and will not turn green again. It is not spreading, and it is not contagious. You can trim it or leave it — the plant does not care much either way.
If you trim, cut following the natural shape of the leaf rather than straight across, and leave a sliver of brown rather than cutting into healthy green tissue. Cutting into living tissue opens a fresh wound that browns off anyway, so you gain nothing and lose a little more leaf.
The real test is the new growth. Fix the cause, then watch the next leaf that opens. If it comes in clean, you got the diagnosis right. If it opens and immediately browns at the tip, you fixed the wrong thing — go back to the table and check the other three.

Why do my plant's leaf tips turn brown and crispy?

Does misting stop brown leaf tips?
No. Misting raises humidity around the leaf for a few minutes and then it evaporates, so it does not change the conditions the plant lives in. On fuzzy-leaved plants in poor airflow it can cause fungal leaf spotting. A humidifier, grouping plants, or moving the plant away from a heating vent all actually work.
Should I cut off brown leaf tips?
You can, but it is cosmetic — the dead tissue is not spreading. If you do trim, follow the leaf's natural shape and leave a thin line of brown rather than cutting into green tissue, because a fresh cut into living tissue just browns off again.
Does letting tap water sit overnight help?
Only for chlorine, which gasses off. It does nothing for fluoride, which is the compound that actually burns tips on spider plants and dracaenas, and nothing for dissolved minerals. For sensitive species use rainwater, distilled or reverse-osmosis water instead.
