Potting Mix: Why Bagged Soil Isn't Enough On Its Own

Most houseplant problems that get blamed on watering are really soil problems. Standard bagged potting mix is dense, holds a great deal of water, and compacts within a year — which means the person who waters correctly still ends up with suffocated roots. Fixing the mix fixes the watering.

What roots actually need

Healthy soil is roughly half solid material and half pore space, and those pores hold the air that roots use. Roots respire — they consume oxygen, like any living tissue. Fill the pores with water and hold them there, and the roots suffocate and rot.

So a good mix does three things at once: holds enough moisture to be available between waterings, drains the excess fast enough that pores refill with air, and resists compacting so it still does both in a year's time. Standard bagged soil is competent at the first and weak at the other two.

There is also a physics quirk worth knowing about, because it explains a lot of failed pots. Water does not simply drain out of the bottom — a saturated layer forms at the base of any container, held by surface tension, whatever the drainage hole is doing. That layer is a fixed depth for a given mix, so a short wide pot has proportionally less waterlogged soil than a tall narrow one. It is also why a gravel layer at the bottom makes things worse rather than better: it raises the saturated zone up into the root ball instead of removing it.

If you buy one thing: perlite. A bag costs very little, lasts through dozens of repots, and mixing it into ordinary potting soil solves the majority of density problems without any further thought.

Three mixes worth making

General houseplant mix

Three parts potting soil, one part perlite. That is it — and for pothos, philodendron, spider plants, peace lilies, dracaena and most common foliage plants it is genuinely all you need. Add a handful of worm castings if the soil is a cheap one with little nutrition.

Aroid / chunky mix

Two parts potting soil, two parts orchid bark, one part perlite, plus a handful of charcoal if you have it. For monstera, philodendron, anthurium, alocasia and anything with thick fleshy roots that in nature climbs rather than sits in ground soil. It looks too coarse the first time you make it. It is not.

Cactus and succulent mix

One part potting soil, one part coarse sand or grit, one part perlite or pumice. The aim is a mix that dries within days. Bagged cactus soil is usually still too rich and water-retentive, so cutting it further with grit is worth doing even when you buy the labelled product.

Two useful adjustments beyond the recipes. Terracotta pots need slightly more moisture retention, since the clay evaporates water through its walls — go easier on the perlite. Plastic and glazed pots need more drainage material, since the only way out is the hole in the bottom.

When to replace it

Potting mix is not permanent. The organic fraction decomposes, particles break down and pack together, and the pore space that made it work disappears. A pot of two- or three-year-old soil can be holding half the air it did when new.

  • Water sits on the surface instead of soaking straight in, or takes a long time to drain through.
  • The soil has shrunk from the sides of the pot, so water runs down the gap and straight out without wetting the root ball.
  • The surface is hard or crusted, sometimes with white mineral deposits — see white stuff on houseplant soil.
  • It stays wet for well over a week when it used to dry in a few days.
  • It smells sour, which means anaerobic conditions and probably root rot already underway.
  • Growth has stalled through spring and summer despite adequate light.

Refreshing the mix does not necessarily mean a bigger pot. If the plant is the size you want, repot into the same pot with fresh mix, or simply top-dress by replacing the top inch or two. The timing rules still apply — spring, not winter, and see when to repot.

Things to skip

  • Garden soil in pots. It compacts into a brick in a container, drains badly, and brings in pests and pathogens. Outdoor soil works outdoors because of soil life, worms and drainage a pot does not have.
  • A gravel layer at the bottom. It raises the saturated zone into the root ball. Persistent advice, wrong the whole time.
  • Rocks or pot shards over the drainage hole. They block it. If you are worried about soil escaping, use a square of mesh or a coffee filter.
  • Fine builder's sand. Fills the pores and sets hard. Only coarse horticultural sand or grit.
  • Moisture-control potting soil for most houseplants. It is engineered to hold water for longer, which is the opposite of what a plant in an indoor pot usually needs.
  • Reusing soil from a plant that died of root rot. The pathogens are still in it.

Bottom line: buy the cheapest reasonable bagged potting soil, add perlite, and you have beaten most premium bagged mixes for a fraction of the price. The expensive part of a specialist bag is usually the label.
