Long bare stretches of stem between leaves. New growth smaller and paler than the old. The whole plant leaning toward the glass. That is a plant reaching for light it cannot find, and there is only one fix.
The technical name is etiolation. The plant spends its energy on stem length instead of leaves, gambling that if it grows tall enough it will find the light. Indoors, it never does.
Your eyes are lying to you about how bright the room is
This is the single reason people get indoor light wrong. Human vision adjusts to enormous swings in brightness without you noticing — walk from full sun into a living room and within a minute the room looks perfectly bright. It is not. It might be receiving one or two percent of the light that was hitting you outside.
Plants have no such adjustment. They get the actual photons or they do not. So a room you would describe as "bright, lots of natural light" is often, in plant terms, deep shade.
The practical test: if you would need to turn a lamp on to read a book comfortably in that spot during the day, it is too dark for most plants to do anything but survive.
Distance from the window matters more than almost anything
Light drops off sharply as you move away from the glass — far faster than it feels like it should. A plant sitting on the windowsill and the same plant six feet into the room are in completely different worlds.

A useful check: crouch down and look from where the plant sits. If it cannot "see" a meaningful patch of sky, it is not getting meaningful light. Anything blocking that view — a wall, a couch back, a sheer curtain — counts.
Which window you have decides what you can grow
In the northern hemisphere, including Atlanta, window direction sets the ceiling on what is possible in that spot. No amount of care beats a bad exposure.

If your only window faces north, that is not a care problem to solve — it is a plant-selection problem. Pick plants that suit it, or add a light.
Why this gets worse every winter
Same window, same spot, far less light. Three things stack up between October and February:
- Shorter days — fewer hours of light per day, straightforwardly
- Lower sun angle — light comes in at a shallower angle and travels through more atmosphere, so it arrives weaker
- More overcast days — cloud cover cuts what does arrive
A plant that was comfortable three feet from an east window in July can be starving in that identical spot in January. This is why plants that seemed fine all summer suddenly decline after the clocks change — nothing about your care went wrong, the light left.
It also means most plants slow down or stop growing in winter, which changes how you should treat them. They need less water, because they are using less. How to fix it
- Move it closer to the glass. Free, immediate, and usually enough. Two feet closer often does more than any product you could buy.
- Clean the window and the leaves. Dirty glass and dusty foliage both cut light measurably. This costs nothing and people never do it.
- Rotate the pot a quarter turn weekly so the plant grows evenly instead of listing permanently toward the window.
- Add a grow light if the spot genuinely cannot be improved. A basic full-spectrum LED on a timer for 10–12 hours a day fixes a north-facing room permanently.
- Cut back the leggy growth. It will not revert to compact. Prune the stretched stems and the plant will branch from lower down — in better light, that new growth comes in tight.
One thing not to do: repot it. Leggy growth is a light problem, and a bigger pot makes it worse rather than better — see the overpotting trap.
What stretching is not
Before you rearrange the house, make sure the symptom matches. Leggy growth is specific.

That last row matters. A plant doing nothing in January is not sick. Resist the urge to fix it with water and fertiliser — that is how a dormant plant becomes a dead one.
Common questions
Will my leggy plant grow back to normal?
The stretched stems will not shorten — that growth is permanent. But if you improve the light and prune back the leggy sections, the plant will branch out below the cut, and that new growth will come in tight and compact. Most plants look better a few months after a hard prune than they did before it.
Is artificial room lighting enough for plants?
Ordinary ceiling and lamp bulbs, no. They are far too dim and are aimed at your eyes rather than at the plant. A dedicated full-spectrum grow LED positioned close to the plant does work, and modern ones are cheap and no longer look like a purple nightclub.
How many hours of grow light do plants need?
For most houseplants, 10–12 hours a day on a timer. More is not better — plants use the dark period for part of their metabolic cycle, so running a light 24 hours is wasteful and can stress the plant. A cheap outlet timer removes the decision entirely.
My plant is right next to a big window but still stretching. Why?
Check three things: whether a sheer curtain or blind is filtering it, which direction the window faces, and whether something outside blocks the sky. A north-facing window is dim regardless of size, and a large window looking at a neighbouring wall six feet away delivers very little usable light.
