Rooting a cutting in a jar of water is easy and satisfying, and it is also where a lot of cuttings die — not in the jar, but two weeks after they go into soil. The reason is not bad luck. Roots grown in water are structurally different from roots grown in soil, and moving between them is the risky step nobody warns you about.
Where to cut, and why the node is everything
A node is the slightly thickened point on a stem where a leaf attaches, and where aerial roots emerge on plants like monstera and philodendron. Roots come from nodes. A cutting without one will not root, however long you wait — it will sit in water looking fine and then rot.
- Choose healthy growth. A cutting cannot outperform its parent, so take from a section with good colour and no pest damage.
- Cut cleanly about a centimetre below a node, with sharp scissors or a blade wiped with rubbing alcohol. A crushed stem invites rot.
- Take a piece with at least one node and one or two leaves. More leaves are not better — the cutting has no roots to supply them, so excess foliage is a liability.
- Strip the leaves off the lowest node. Any leaf sitting underwater rots and fouls the jar.
- For large-leaved cuttings, cut the remaining leaf in half across its width to reduce water loss while it has no roots.
Timing matters more than people expect: spring and early summer, while the parent plant is actively growing, gives markedly faster and more reliable rooting than autumn or winter. A cutting taken in November may sit unchanged for two months and then rot — not a failure of technique, just a plant with nothing to spare.

Succulents in particular should never go into water. Let the cut end callus over — dry in open air for a few days until the wound seals — then set it on barely moist gritty mix. A succulent cutting in a jar rots reliably.
Why water roots struggle in soil
This is the part usually left out. In water, a root is bathed in moisture and dissolved oxygen, so it does not need to work for either. It grows thin and smooth, with few of the fine root hairs that a soil root uses to extract water from between particles.
Move that root into soil and it is suddenly in a completely different medium — abrasive, drier in places, with air pockets. Many of those water-adapted roots simply die, and the cutting has to grow a second, different root system from scratch, while wilting. That is the collapse people see a fortnight after potting up.
It is survivable, and the way to survive it is to move early and ease the transition:
- Transfer when roots are 2–5cm long. The most common mistake is waiting for an impressive tangle — the longer roots grow in water, the more committed they are to water, and the worse the transfer goes.
- Pot into a light, airy mix, not dense potting soil. Extra perlite. The closer it is to the airy conditions of water, the smaller the shock.
- Keep it noticeably moister than an established plant for the first two weeks, then taper. This is the one situation where consistently damp soil is correct.
- Raise humidity around the cutting for those two weeks — a clear bag or a propagation box over it — so the leaves lose less water while roots re-establish.
- Expect some wilting. Do not respond by drowning it.
- Or skip the problem entirely: root in damp perlite, sphagnum moss or a perlite-water mix. Roots grown in those are far closer to soil roots, and the transfer is almost uneventful. This is what most experienced propagators actually do.
What helps, and what does not
- Warmth helps. Rooting is much faster at 21–24°C than at 15°C. A warm room does more than any product.
- Bright indirect light helps. Direct sun cooks a cutting that has no roots to replace lost water. Deep shade slows everything.
- Changing the water every three or four days matters more than people think. Stale water goes anaerobic, and a stem sitting in it rots at the waterline.
- Rooting hormone is useful for woody cuttings — rosemary, hibiscus, fig — and close to pointless for pothos and philodendron, which root readily without it.
- Honey and cinnamon are not rooting hormones. Both have mild antimicrobial properties, which is not the same thing. They will not make a cutting root faster.
- Fertiliser does not help an unrooted cutting and can burn it. Wait until it has roots and new growth.
- Do not keep pulling it out to check. Every inspection breaks fine new roots. Once a week is plenty.

One genuinely useful application beyond making free plants: cuttings are the fallback when a plant is past saving. If the roots are gone and the stem is soft at soil level, no rescue will work — but healthy top growth above the damage will often root without complaint.
