For medical growers focused on consistency and quality, a well-dialed indoor setup produces the most predictable results. The tradeoff is upfront cost and ongoing electricity use. Indoor growing has a real learning curve. Your first grow will almost certainly not be perfect — and that’s fine. Plan to observe and adjust. The most common beginner mistakes are overwatering, over-feeding, and inadequate airflow. Master those three and you’re most of the way there.

A horizontal mesh screen placed 10–14 inches above the canopy. As branches grow through the screen, weave them horizontally. The goal is a flat, even canopy where every bud site gets direct light. ScrOG is the most effective technique for maximizing yield per square foot in a 4×4 tent. Start with LST before adding the screen.

The Southeast is one of the more challenging climates for outdoor cannabis due to summer humidity. Mold-resistant strains, proper spacing, and a preventive IPM program are non-negotiable. Do not plant strains bred for dry climates (many popular West Coast genetics) without checking their disease resistance profile. The harvest and curing process determines the final medicinal quality, terpene preservation, potency, and smoothness of your product. An organically grown plant that is harvested too early, dried too fast, or insufficiently cured will underperform its potential. Patience here is the most important skill.
Package timelines from seed banks are estimates. They are often optimistic. The actual harvest window must be determined by looking at trichomes under magnification — no other method is reliable. You need at minimum a 60x jeweler’s loupe; ideally a 60–100x digital microscope.

Fan leaves produce trichomes that mature faster than bud trichomes. Always assess harvest readiness by inspecting the smaller sugar leaves immediately surrounding the buds, or the trichomes on the bud calyxes themselves. Checking fan leaves will lead you to harvest early.
In synthetic nutrient growing, flushing with plain water in the final 1–2 weeks before harvest helps clear salt build-up and excess nutrients from the medium, improving final taste. In true living soil organic growing, this is less critical — there are no salt build-ups, and the soil biology continues feeding the plant at appropriate levels regardless. However, many organic growers still do a 7–10 day water-only period before harvest as an insurance measure and to help the plant use its remaining stored energy. Hang whole plants upside down or cut into large branches and hang. Do not trim fan leaves before drying if possible — they slow the drying process, preserving terpenes. Trim after the dry. Manicuring live plants (wet trimming) speeds drying but sacrifices terpene quality.
Target: 60–65°F, 55–60% relative humidity, complete darkness, gentle airflow (fan oscillating in room, not blowing directly on buds).
