You put up yellow sticky traps, they fill with little black flies, and two weeks later there are just as many. That is not a failed trap — it is the wrong target. The flies you can see are the last four days of a life cycle happening entirely in your soil, and until you go after the larvae you are bailing out a boat without plugging the hole.
What you are actually dealing with
Fungus gnats are small dark flies, two to three millimetres long, with long legs and a weak drifting flight. Disturb a pot and a few lift off and wander around before settling back down. They do not bite and they do not sting.
The full cycle runs about three to four weeks at normal room temperature: eggs hatch in a few days, larvae feed in the top inch of soil for a couple of weeks, pupate, then emerge as adults that live around a week. One female lays up to a couple of hundred eggs in that week.
Adults are harmless. They eat nothing of consequence and mostly annoy you. The larvae are the actual pest — translucent maggots with a black head, feeding on fungus and organic matter in wet soil, and on fine root hairs once the population is dense enough. On a mature plant that is a nuisance. On seedlings and fresh cuttings it is fatal, because a seedling's entire root system is fine root hair.
This is why timing matters. Kill every adult in the house today and in five days a new batch emerges from pupae that were already in the soil. Any method that only touches adults resets to zero every generation.
They are a symptom, not a cause
Fungus gnat larvae need consistently damp organic soil. They cannot complete their cycle in soil that dries out. So a persistent infestation is telling you something specific: the top inch of your pots is never drying.
That usually traces back to one of a small set of things — watering on a fixed schedule instead of checking, an oversized pot holding more water than the roots can use, soil that has compacted and stopped draining, or a decorative pot with no drainage hole hiding a reservoir at the bottom. Gnats appearing across your whole collection at once is a watering-habit problem. Gnats in one pot is a problem with that pot.
Worth checking honestly, because the same conditions that breed gnats are the conditions that cause root rot. If you have gnats, read overwatering: the killer that looks like thirst — the gnats may be the least of it.
One more common entry point: bagged potting soil. A bag that has been sitting damp in a garden centre or in your garage frequently arrives with eggs already in it. If gnats appear a week after you repot something, that is where they came from, not from your windows.
The method that works: hit both stages at once
You need to break the cycle from both ends in the same three-week window — stop the adults laying, and kill the larvae already in the soil. Doing one and then the other lets the population rebuild in the gap.
1. Dry the top layer out
Let the top inch to two inches of soil dry properly between waterings. This alone makes the soil surface hostile to eggs and young larvae, and for a light infestation on drought-tolerant plants it can be most of the fix.
Water from the bottom while you are fighting an infestation — stand the pot in a tray of water for twenty minutes or so, let it drink up, then remove it. The root zone gets what it needs and the surface stays dry. Do not leave pots standing in water beyond that; you trade gnats for rot.
Caveat worth stating: ferns, calathea and other plants that genuinely cannot dry out will not tolerate this. For those, lean harder on the biological control below rather than drought.
2. Cap the soil surface
A physical barrier stops females reaching the soil to lay. Half an inch of coarse sand, fine gravel, or horticultural grit works. So does a layer of pumice or perlite — it dries almost instantly and reads as bone dry to an egg-laying female.
This is genuinely effective and permanent, and it is the step most people skip because it changes how the pot looks.
3. Sticky traps — for monitoring, mostly
Yellow sticky cards catch adults and give you a live count of whether you are winning. Lay them flat on the soil surface rather than sticking them upright — fungus gnats spend most of their time walking on and just above the soil, so a horizontal trap catches several times more than a vertical one.
Traps do reduce laying pressure, but on their own they never clear an infestation. Treat them as instrumentation, not as the treatment.

Why people fail at this
- Stopping after two weeks because the flies are mostly gone. Pupae already in the soil are unaffected by everything above and are still due to emerge. Run treatment a full three to four weeks past the last sighting.
- Treating only the plant with visible gnats. Adults fly. In a room with eight pots, all eight need treating, or the survivors just move back.
- Going back to old watering habits the moment it clears. The infestation was a symptom. Restore the wet-surface conditions and you get a fresh population from the next bag of soil.
- Reaching for a systemic insecticide. Overkill for a nuisance pest, and it does not address the wet soil that invited them.
Are they actually hurting the plant?
Straight answer: on an established houseplant, usually not much. A light population of larvae grazing fungus in the top inch is close to harmless, and the adults do no damage at all. Plenty of the panic online is out of proportion.
Where they genuinely matter: seedlings, fresh cuttings trying to root, and any pot with a heavy population where larvae have run out of fungus and started on root hairs. If you propagate anything, or you are starting seeds for spring, take them seriously — a tray of seedlings can be wiped out in days.
And treat their arrival as free information. A gnat outbreak is your soil telling you it stays too wet, which is worth knowing regardless of how you feel about the flies.
