Houseplant Pest Identification, By What You Can See

Most failed pest treatments are not failures of the treatment. They are failures of identification — soap sprayed at scale insects that a waxy shell shrugs off, or a fungicide used on fungus gnats. Six pests cover almost everything that turns up on indoor plants, and each one gives itself away differently.

Two shortcuts worth internalising. Anything coming off the soil rather than the plant is almost certainly fungus gnats — and they are a watering problem wearing an insect costume. And damage to leaves that have not opened yet points to aphids, thrips or broad mites, because something fed on the leaf while it was still forming. Damage to leaves that already existed is more often environmental than biological.

Sticky leaves and black film

If leaves feel tacky, or there is a sticky film on the floor or windowsill under the plant, that is honeydew — sugary waste excreted by sap-sucking insects. It narrows the field immediately: aphids, mealybugs, scale or whitefly. Spider mites and thrips do not produce it.

A black sooty coating growing on top of that stickiness is sooty mould. The mould is harmless in itself and is not attacking the plant — it is feeding on the honeydew. Treat the insect and the mould stops appearing; wipe the residue off with a damp cloth afterwards.

So sticky leaves are a genuinely useful clue. Find the honeydew, then look directly above it — the insects are on the undersides of the leaves higher up the plant, dripping down.

The six, in short

Fungus gnats

Adults are harmless nuisances; larvae in the soil are the pest, and only really matter to seedlings and cuttings. They need permanently damp topsoil, so their presence is a message about your watering. Sticky traps alone never clear them — the full method is in fungus gnats: killing the larvae, not just the flies.

Spider mites

The most likely of these six to actually kill an established plant, and the hardest to spot early. They thrive in warm, dry, still air, which makes a heated house in winter close to ideal. Mealybugs

Slow-moving, protected by a waxy coat that repels water-based sprays, which is why people think soap does not work on them. Dab each one with rubbing alcohol on a cotton bud first, then spray. They also hide in leaf axils and under pot rims. Covered alongside the things it gets confused with in white stuff on houseplant soil.

Scale

The one most often mistaken for part of the plant. Adult scale insects are immobile, armoured bumps — brown, tan or black, 2–5mm — clamped onto stems and the ribs of leaf undersides. People pick at them for months assuming they are bark or scarring.

That armour is the problem: contact sprays barely penetrate it. The reliable approach is physical — scrape them off with a fingernail or an old toothbrush, or dab with alcohol — followed by horticultural oil to smother the mobile juvenile stage (called crawlers) that hatches out over the following weeks. Repeat every week for a month. Any plan that skips the scraping tends to fail.

Aphids

The easiest of the six. Soft-bodied, clustered on the newest growth and flower buds, visible without effort. They reproduce fast but they die easily — a firm rinse in the sink removes most of a population, and insecticidal soap handles the rest. Two or three treatments a few days apart is usually the whole job.

They come indoors on new plants and on cut flowers, and they arrive on plants summered outside. Check anything before bringing it back in for autumn.

Thrips

The worst of the six to deal with, and increasingly common. They are slim and under 2mm, they feed by rasping the leaf surface and drinking what leaks out, which leaves silvery streaks and scarring, and they scatter tiny black specks of frass. New growth comes out distorted.

They are hard to clear because part of the life cycle happens in the soil, out of reach of foliar sprays — so, like fungus gnats, you have to treat the soil as well as the leaves. Expect weeks, blue sticky traps to monitor, repeat treatments every five days, and strict isolation. If you have thrips on one plant, assume the plants either side have them too.

What to do before you know what it is

  1. Isolate the plant now. Another room, not another shelf. This costs nothing and is right for every pest on the list.
  2. Photograph the damage, including a close shot of a leaf underside. Useful for comparison in a week, and for asking someone.
  3. Check leaf undersides and axils on that plant and on every plant that was within touching distance. Assume the neighbours are infested until you have looked.
  4. Rinse the plant thoroughly in a sink or shower with room-temperature water. Physical removal is safe, free, effective against everything here, and buys time.
  5. Then identify using the table above, and treat specifically. Guessing at this stage wastes the fortnight that matters most.
  6. Quarantine anything new for two weeks as standing policy. Almost every indoor infestation arrives on a new plant.

One thing that applies to all six: treat on a schedule, not once. Eggs survive nearly every contact treatment available to a home grower, and they hatch a few days later. A single spray kills the current generation and leaves the next one an empty plant to colonise. Every pest here needs repeat treatment every four to seven days for at least three weeks, and continuing a fortnight past the last sighting.

When it is not a pest at all

Plenty of plants get sprayed for pests they do not have. Before treating, rule these out:

  • Yellowing with no visible insects and no stippling is more often water, light or nutrients. Start with the yellow leaf diagnostic.
  • Brown crispy tips are usually humidity, salt buildup or fluoride, not pests. See reading the pattern on the leaf.
  • White fuzz on the soil only, which smears when touched, is harmless saprophytic mould, not mealybugs.
  • Small hard white balls in the mix are perlite. They came with the soil.
  • Sudden wilting in damp soil is root rot, and spraying the leaves does nothing. See root rot rescue.
  • Leaf drop after moving the plant is shock. Give it a fortnight before deciding anything is wrong.

Pesticide on a plant with a watering problem does not fix the watering problem, and it stresses a plant that is already struggling. Identification first — then the treatment does what it says it will.

How do I identify houseplant pests?

Start with where the damage is. Flies coming off the soil are fungus gnats. Fine pale stippling on leaves, seen by holding them to a window, is spider mites. Their armour blocks contact sprays, so treatment has to be physical first — scraping or alcohol — then horticultural oil weekly for a month to catch the crawlers as they hatch.

Can I treat a houseplant pest without knowing which one it is?

You can start safely: isolate the plant in another room and rinse it thoroughly with room-temperature water. Physical removal works against all the common pests and buys you time. But treat specifically after that — soap does little to armoured scale, fungicide does nothing to fungus gnats, and the wrong treatment wastes the fortnight that matters most.
