Spider mites are the pest most likely to kill an established houseplant, and the one people find last. Webbing is not an early sign — it is a late one. By the time you can see it, a population has been doubling every few days for weeks, and you are no longer treating an infestation so much as a colony.
Why winter is their season
Spider mites want warm, dry, still air. A centrally heated house in January delivers all three better than any greenhouse: 70°F, humidity at 20–30%, and no wind. Their egg-to-adult cycle compresses to about a week in those conditions, against three weeks in cool humid air.
That is the whole reason a plant that was fine all summer gets overrun in February. Outdoors and in humid air they are held in check by rain, predators and their own intolerance of moisture. Indoors in winter, nothing checks them.
So spider mites belong on the winter houseplant checklist as a monthly inspection, not as something you deal with once it announces itself.
Finding them early
Adults are under half a millimetre — at the edge of what an unaided eye resolves. You will not spot them by looking casually at a leaf. What you can see is their damage, and there are two reliable tests.
The backlight test
Hold a leaf up between your eye and a window. Mites feed by puncturing individual cells and draining them, so each feeding site becomes a tiny dead spot that light passes through. Early damage looks like fine pale stippling — a scatter of pinprick dots, almost like the leaf has been sprayed with a fine mist of bleach.
This is the single most useful thing in this article. Stippling shows up a week or two before webbing, and it is unmistakable once you have seen it. Yellowing without stippling is something else — start with the yellow leaf diagnostic instead.
The paper test
Hold a sheet of white paper under a leaf and tap the leaf sharply a few times. Look at the paper for thirty seconds. Specks of dust do not move. Spider mites do — slowly, but they walk. If anything on that paper is travelling, you have them, and you have found them early enough to matter.

Note where to look: undersides of the lower leaves first. Mites start on the sheltered, older growth and work upward. Inspecting the pretty top leaves is how people miss them for a month.
Why one treatment never works
Two facts about their biology dictate the whole treatment plan, and ignoring either is why people believe they have failed.
Eggs are immune to almost everything you will spray. Contact treatments — soap, oil, alcohol — kill adults and nymphs by smothering or desiccating them. Eggs have a protective coating and survive. They hatch three to five days later into a fresh generation, and if you sprayed once you have simply cleared the field for them.
They breed faster than they die. A female lays around a hundred eggs over her life, and in warm dry air a new generation reaches breeding age in about a week. Killing 90% of a population that triples weekly buys you a fortnight.
So the rule is: treat every 4–5 days, at least four times, and keep going a fortnight past the last sign. Four to five days is the window that catches each hatch before it can lay. Miss a cycle and you restart.

The combination that clears a plant: shower it, let it dry, spray insecticidal soap to full coverage including undersides, then repeat both every four to five days for three weeks. Nothing clever — just complete coverage on a short enough cycle.
Quarantine, or you will do this forever
Mites disperse by walking to touching leaves, and by riding air currents and your hands and sleeves. Treating the affected plant while its neighbours sit untouched next to it is the most common reason an infestation cycles for months.
- Move the infested plant to a separate room the moment you find them. Not a different shelf — a different room.
- Inspect every plant that was within touching distance, backlighting leaves and using the paper test. Assume they are infested until a test says otherwise.
- Treat everything that shows stippling on the same schedule, in the same window.
- Wash your hands between handling an infested plant and a clean one. This sounds excessive and is how they travel.
- Wipe down the shelf, the windowsill and the saucers. Mites overwinter in cracks off-plant.
- Keep the plant in quarantine for a full month after the last sign before returning it.
Same discipline for anything new coming into the house: a fortnight of quarantine on every nursery plant and every gift plant. Most indoor mite outbreaks arrive on a new purchase, and a nursery is a warm dry crowded room — the ideal breeding conditions described above.
When to give up on a plant
Worth saying plainly, because sentimentality here costs you other plants. A plant that is more than half defoliated, greyed across most of its remaining leaves, and visibly webbed at every axil is a reservoir. The realistic outcome of nursing it is a three-month campaign and a mediocre plant at the end.
If it is a common pothos or ivy, bag it, bin it, and buy a replacement for a few dollars. Take cuttings only from growth with no stippling, and treat those cuttings before they go anywhere near your other plants.
If it is irreplaceable, commit properly: full defoliation of the worst growth, shower plus soap every four days for a month, in isolation. That works. Half-measures on a severe infestation do not, and every week it stays in the room is another week of mites walking to your other shelves.
