"How often should I water?" has no answer, and that is not a dodge — the honest reply is that frequency depends on light, season, temperature, pot material, pot size and how root-bound the plant is, all of which change through the year. What you want instead is a reliable way to tell, in ten seconds, whether today is the day.
Why the schedule fails
"Water every Sunday" is the single most common way people kill houseplants. A schedule is a statement about your calendar, not about the plant, and the plant's water use changes by a factor of two or more between July and January as light and growth drop away.
Keep a summer interval through winter and the pot never fully dries. Roots sit in airless saturated soil, suffocate, and rot — and the plant then wilts, in wet soil, looking exactly like it needs water. The fix is not a better schedule. It is checking.
The four checks
1. The finger test
Push a finger into the soil up to the second knuckle — roughly two inches. If it is damp at that depth, wait. If it is dry, most plants are ready.
This is the default for a reason: it samples where the roots actually are. The surface tells you almost nothing, because the top half inch dries within a day in any warm room while the root zone below stays wet for a week.
2. The weight test
Lift the pot. A freshly watered pot is dramatically heavier than a dry one — water is heavy and a pot holds a lot of it. After doing this a few times on the same plant you can judge by weight alone, without touching the soil at all.
This is the fastest method once calibrated, and the best one for plants where you would rather not keep disturbing the surface. Lift the pot right after watering, then lift it again a week later, and the difference is unmistakable.
3. The wooden skewer
Push a plain wooden skewer or chopstick to the bottom of the pot, leave it a minute, pull it out. Damp soil darkens the wood and clings to it. Clean and dry means the whole pot is dry.
Best method for deep or large pots where a finger cannot reach the root zone, and for anyone who wants certainty about what is happening at the bottom — which is exactly where rot starts and where the finger test cannot see.
4. What the plant is doing
Some plants signal clearly. Peace lilies droop dramatically and recover within hours of watering. Succulent leaves wrinkle and soften slightly. Fittonia collapses theatrically and springs back.
Useful as a backstop, not as a primary method — by the time a plant signals it has already been stressed, and repeated cycles of wilting damage roots. Also unreliable in the direction that matters most: a wilting plant in damp soil is rotting, not thirsty, and watering it again is the worst available response.
On moisture meters
The cheap two-prong meters sold for houseplants do not measure moisture. They measure electrical conductivity between two probes, which is affected by moisture but also by dissolved fertiliser salts, soil composition and how firmly the probe contacts the mix.
The practical consequences: a pot with accumulated fertiliser salt reads wetter than it is, a chunky bark-heavy mix reads drier than it is, and readings drift over time as salts build up. Several will read differently in the same pot depending on where you push them in.
Where they have some value is deep pots and large floor plants you cannot lift, used for relative readings on the same plant over time rather than as absolute numbers. But a wooden skewer costs almost nothing and tells you the same thing more honestly. If you own one, do not let it overrule your finger.

How you water matters nearly as much as when.
- Water thoroughly, until it runs from the drainage hole. This wets the entire root ball and flushes accumulated salts through. Frequent small sips leave the lower root ball permanently dry while keeping the top permanently wet — the worst of both.
- Empty the saucer after ten or fifteen minutes. A pot standing in its own runoff is wicking it straight back up, which is functionally the same as having no drainage.
- Use room-temperature water. Cold water from a winter tap shocks tropical roots and causes leaf spotting on some species.
- Water the soil, not the leaves. Water sitting in crowns and axils invites rot on African violets, succulents and anything with a tight rosette.
- If the soil has gone hydrophobic — water beading and running straight down the sides without soaking in — stand the whole pot in a basin of water for twenty minutes and let it absorb from below. Very dry peat-based mixes repel water, so it looks like you watered when nothing reached the roots.
Bottom-watering — standing the pot in water and letting it wick up — is a legitimate routine method, not just a rescue. It draws moisture evenly through the root ball and keeps the surface dry, which discourages fungus gnats. The one drawback is that it does not flush salts out, so top-water thoroughly every fourth or fifth time to clear them.
