Seed Starting Under Lights, Without Leggy Seedlings

Almost every indoor seed-starting failure is one of two things: the light was too far away, or the soil surface stayed too wet. Everything else — the fancy trays, the heat mats, the brand of mix — is detail around those two. Get the distance and the moisture right and seed starting is close to foolproof.

Why a windowsill produces leggy seedlings

A seedling that germinates in low light does something specific and irreversible: it spends its stored energy on stem length, racing upward to find light before its reserves run out. You get a long pale wobbly stem with a small pair of leaves on top.

That stretch cannot be undone. A leggy seedling stays structurally weak, flops under its own weight, and transplants badly. It is not a cosmetic problem — you have lost the plant's first two weeks and it never fully catches up.

Even a bright south window in February delivers a fraction of what a seedling wants, and it comes from one side, so the seedling also leans. This is the same mechanism as leggy houseplant growth, just faster and more consequential, because a seedling has no established root system to fall back on.

Total cost of a workable setup is modest — a wire shelving unit, one or two LED bars, a $5 timer and some trays. Almost all of the value is in the two adjustable inches above the seedlings, which is the part that costs nothing.

Watering: from below, and let the surface dry

Seedlings are killed by two opposite mistakes in the same week — drying out completely, which they cannot survive at all, and a permanently wet surface, which brings damping-off.

Damping-off is a genuine pathogenic fungus, unlike the harmless white mould that grows on houseplant soil. Seedlings collapse at the soil line, stems pinched and water-soaked, and it moves through a tray in a day or two. There is no cure once a seedling has toppled — only prevention.

  • Water from below. Pour into the solid bottom tray, let the cells wick up for fifteen to twenty minutes, then pour off what is left. The root zone gets moisture and the surface stays drier.
  • Never leave trays standing in water beyond that. Constant saturation is how you get both damping-off and rotted roots.
  • Get the dome off as soon as most seeds have germinated. It has done its job and is now a humid, still, fungus-friendly box.
  • Run a fan on low for a few hours a day. It dries the surface, and the light mechanical stress genuinely produces thicker, stronger stems.
  • Use fresh mix and clean trays. Reused unwashed trays carry the pathogen over from last year. A rinse with hot soapy water is enough.
  • Do not fertilise until the first true leaves appear. The seed carries its own supply. After that, quarter-strength liquid feed every week or two.

Atlanta timing

Our average last frost is late March, and start dates count backwards from it. These are the windows that matter most, and the mistake in both directions is real: start too early and you have leggy root-bound transplants waiting weeks indoors; too late and you lose the spring window before summer heat shuts things down.

Atlanta's specific hazard is a warm February that convinces everyone spring has arrived, followed by a hard frost in the third week of March. Do not put transplants out on the strength of two warm weeks. Watch the ten-day forecast, and keep something on hand to cover with.

Hardening off — the step people skip

A seedling raised indoors has never met wind, direct sun, or a cold night. Moved straight outside it can be scorched or shredded in an afternoon, which is a bitter way to lose eight weeks of work.

  1. Start about a week to ten days before transplanting.
  2. Day one: two hours outside in full shade, sheltered from wind. Bring it back in.
  3. Increase outdoor time by an hour or two each day, and gradually introduce morning sun.
  4. By day five or six, several hours including a few hours of direct sun.
  5. Leave them out overnight for the last two nights, if nights are above about 50°F.
  6. Transplant on an overcast day or in the late afternoon, never into midday sun.
  7. Water thoroughly after transplanting, and expect a few days of sulking regardless.

Skipping this is the most common way a successful indoor start turns into a failed garden. The seedlings looked perfect on the shelf, and that is exactly the problem — perfect indoor conditions produce plants with no defences.

Why start seeds at all

Honest accounting: for tomatoes and peppers, seed starting is straightforwardly worth it. A packet costs a couple of dollars and yields dozens of plants, against $4–6 for a single nursery transplant, and the varieties worth growing are almost never the four the big box store carries.

For a handful of plants of a common variety, it is not obviously worth the shelf, the light and the eight weeks of attention. Buying four tomato plants in April is a perfectly reasonable choice.

Where it becomes compelling is varieties — the heirlooms and regional selections that never appear as transplants, and seed you save yourself. That is the actual argument for a light shelf, and it is a better one than saving money.
