Humidity is the most oversold variable in houseplant care. It matters enormously for a specific group of plants and hardly at all for the ones most people own — and a lot of money gets spent solving it for pothos and snake plants, which do not care.
Measure before you buy anything
Buy a hygrometer first. They cost very little, and it is the only way to know whether you have a problem. People routinely assume their home is dry because a plant looks unhappy, then discover the room sits at 45% and the actual issue was watering.
For reference, in Atlanta: summer indoors with air conditioning typically runs 45–55%. Winter with central heating runs 20–35%, and it drops further during a cold snap. That winter figure is the real one, and it is a genuine gap for the plants that mind.
Put the hygrometer next to the plants rather than across the room, because the number varies more than you would expect within a single space — a windowsill above a radiator and a bathroom shelf are different climates.

If everything you own is in the bottom row — which describes a great many collections — you do not need a humidifier and you should spend the money on light instead. Light is almost always the binding constraint indoors, and it is the one people underestimate while worrying about humidity.
The rough rule: thin, soft leaves that feel papery come from humid understory environments and want moisture in the air. Thick, waxy, leathery or succulent leaves are built to hold water and are indifferent.
Try the free fixes first
- Move the plant away from heating vents. Forced air dries a plant at several times the room rate. Three feet often solves the whole problem and costs nothing.
- Move it away from cold window glass and draughty doors, which cause their own damage that gets misread as dry air.
- Group plants together. Each transpires, and a tight cluster genuinely holds a more humid pocket — measurable on a hygrometer, though modest.
- Relocate to a bathroom or kitchen if the light there is adequate. Light comes first: a humid dark corner kills faster than dry air ever will.
- Enclose it. A cabinet, a cloche, a converted aquarium. This is what people with genuinely thriving calatheas are doing, and it beats a humidifier for a small number of demanding plants.
What does not work, and it is worth being blunt because the advice is everywhere: misting. It raises humidity around a leaf for a few minutes and then it evaporates, changing nothing about the conditions the plant lives in — and on fuzzy leaves in still winter air it invites fungal spotting. - Tank size matters more than features. A small tank in a dry room runs out overnight, and a humidifier that is empty by morning is doing nothing during the hours you are not watching it. Look for something you refill daily at most.
- Place it a few feet from the plants, not pointed directly at them. A jet of cold mist onto leaves causes spotting on some species and does nothing for the room.
- Get one with a humidistat if you can, so it holds a target rather than running flat out. Otherwise pair a cheap unit with a plug timer.
- Aim for 50–60%. Do not chase 70% — you would be creating conditions for mould on walls and furnishings, and the plants do not need it.
- Use distilled or filtered water in an ultrasonic, or accept fine white mineral dust settling on leaves, shelves and floor.
- Clean the tank weekly, properly. This is the one that matters beyond your plants: a neglected reservoir grows bacteria and an ultrasonic unit aerosolises it into air you breathe. Rinse and dry daily, disinfect weekly.
What a humidifier will not fix
Plenty of symptoms get blamed on dry air and then fail to improve after the purchase, because dry air was never the cause.
- Brown crispy tips have four common causes and humidity is only one — salt buildup from fertiliser and fluoride in tap water are at least as common. Diagnose before spending: reading the pattern on the leaf.
