Thrips: Why Spraying the Leaves Is Not Enough

Thrips are the pest that defeats people who successfully cleared spider mites and mealybugs using the same approach. The reason is structural: part of the thrips life cycle happens in the soil, out of reach of anything you spray on the leaves. Treat only what you can see and you are killing perhaps half a population that keeps re-emerging from the pot.

Recognising them

Adults are slim, under 2mm, and range from pale yellow to near-black. They are fast — a disturbed leaf sends them darting or dropping — and easy to dismiss as a speck of dirt. You will usually diagnose thrips by their damage rather than by seeing one clearly.

Confirming test: hold a sheet of white paper under a leaf or flower and tap it sharply. Thrips fall, and then they move — fast, slim slivers, quite unlike the slow crawl of a spider mite. If you are unsure which pest you are dealing with at all, work through houseplant pest identification first, because the treatment below is specific and expensive in effort.

Blue sticky traps are worth adding immediately. Thrips are drawn to blue more than to yellow, and traps give you a live count of whether the population is falling — which matters over a treatment that runs for weeks.

Why they are so hard to clear

The life cycle runs about two to three weeks indoors and has five stages: egg, two feeding larval stages, then prepupa and pupa, then adult.

  • Eggs are inserted inside leaf tissue, not laid on the surface. Nothing you spray reaches them. They hatch several days later regardless of what you did to the plant.
  • Pupation happens in the soil for most species. Larvae drop off the plant, pupate in the top layer of the mix, and climb back up as adults. A perfect foliar spray misses this stage entirely.
  • Adults fly. They move between plants readily, so a single treated plant in a room of untreated ones gets recolonised.
  • They hide in leaf axils, flower buds and new furled growth, where spray coverage is worst.

Put together: at any moment a large share of the population is somewhere your treatment cannot reach. That is why thrips need both a leaf treatment and a soil treatment, run simultaneously, for longer than feels necessary.

The plan

1. Isolate, immediately

Different room, not a different shelf. Adults fly, and thrips spread through a collection faster than any other pest on this list. Assume plants that were adjacent are already infested and inspect them properly.

2. Cut your losses on the worst growth

Remove badly scarred leaves and any flowers. This is not cosmetic — flowers are where thrips concentrate and breed, and heavily damaged leaves are not recovering anyway. Sacrificing the blooms shortens the whole campaign considerably. Bag the trimmings and take them outside rather than leaving them in an indoor bin.

3. Physical removal

Shower the plant thoroughly with room-temperature water, undersides included, before every spray treatment. It removes a large share of the mobile population for free and improves how well anything you apply afterwards works.

4. Treat the leaves

Whichever you use: every five days, minimum four times, and continue two weeks past the last sighting. Five days is the window that catches each hatch before it matures and lays.

5. Treat the soil — the step people skip

  • Beneficial nematodes (*Steinernema feltiae*) drenched into the soil hunt the pupating stage. This is the most effective soil option and the one that turns a stalled campaign around.
  • Spinosad as a soil drench also reaches pupae, and lets one product cover both fronts.
  • Top with coarse sand or grit, half an inch, as a physical barrier to larvae dropping down and adults climbing back up. Same trick as for fungus gnats.
  • Replace the top inch of soil on a badly infested plant, or repot entirely and discard the old mix.
  • Do not rely on hydrogen peroxide here. It kills what it contacts in the top layer and does little against pupae deeper in the pot.

Realistic expectations

Four to eight weeks. That is the honest figure, and people who quit at three weeks because the leaves stopped getting worse are the ones who report that thrips are impossible.

Judge progress by new growth and trap counts, not by existing damage. Silvery scarring never heals — that tissue is dead. The question is whether the next leaf opens clean. Two consecutive clean new leaves and a falling trap count is what winning looks like.

On when to give up: a heavily infested common plant is a reservoir seeding everything else in the house, and the arithmetic often favours replacing it. If it is irreplaceable, commit to the full eight weeks in isolation — half-measures reliably fail with this pest.

Prevention is more valuable here than with most pests, because the cure is so laborious. Quarantine every new plant for two weeks and inspect it, especially anything bought in flower — thrips arrive in blooms more often than on foliage, and a flowering plant from a busy shop is the highest-risk purchase you can make.
